Forest Camping - The ideal family caravan and campsite
Welcome to Forest Camping in Rendlesham Forest, Suffolk
Forest Camping in Rendlesham Forest, Suffolk The Idyllic Setting for Tents, Touring Caravans & Motorhomes
Forest Camping, Tangham Campsite is a family run campsite welcoming tents, touring caravans, motorhomes and campervans. The site is a level, well drained, 2.8 hectare (7 acre) field set in the heart of Rendlesham Forest, Suffolk (Forestry Commission). The forest is a great place for you to enjoy wildlife, nature and stargazing. At any time you may see deer, squirrels, rabbits and birds, you may also hear the Nightingale song around May time.
With plenty of fresh air and open space you can enjoy walking and cycling on our doorstep with six way marked trails ranging from 0.75 miles to 11 miles. The most popular trail is the 3 mile way marked Red circular walk through the forest, starting and finishing at Rendlesham Forest Centre car park.
Remember to bring your bicycle to explore the wider forest, Suffolk Coastal Cycle route and more. Cycle and footpath maps are sold in our shop. Our shop stocks chilled drinks, ice cream and basic essentials.
We have a small children´s play area on site or for the older children there is a larger adventure play park only a short walk away at the Rendlesham forest centre. Also a short ride from the Forest Centre there is a BMX track for the experienced rider. The forest is a great place for children and families to explore freely for hours or build dens or learn to cycle.
So why don’t you come along, relax, and find out why we have hundreds of returning families each year! read more about the local area >>
You will be staying in a designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and close to the Suffolk Heritage Coast.
Woodbridge (7 miles) is our nearest local town. It has a pedestrianised high street with a good mix of local and high street brands including the winner of Britain's Best Bakery, The Cake Shop. Woodbridge boasts it's famous working Tide Mill and a fantastic river walk suitable for those with pushchairs. Woodbridge also has a swimming pool and cinema located by the train station.
The renowned National Trust Sutton Hoo Anglo-Saxon Burial Site (6 miles) is accessible by bike using tracks through the forest.
Felixstowe (20 miles) is the main seaside resort with a swimming pool and a pier with amusements and a Sunday Market
Also on the coast, Aldeburgh (13 miles) hosts the world renowned Aldeburgh Music Festival and features the famous fish and chip queue whereas Southwold (26 miles) offers a brilliant Pier to discover and Adnam’s Brewery. There are also great places to go crabbing including Bawdsey (10 miles), Orford (6 miles), Ramsholt (12 miles) and Walberswick (24 miles). You may also like a trip to Snape Maltings (7 miles) for a unique shopping experience set along the river Alde and the famous concert hall.
For those interested in history, a visit to Dunwich (20 miles) and it’s small donation funded museum would be worthwhile, it tells the story of the city lost to the sea. There are castles to visit at Framlingham (18miles) and Orford (6 miles). At Orfordness (7 miles) you will find pagoda style buildings and broadcasting aerials which over the years led to many rumours as the public were not allowed on this small strip of land. To discover the reasons for the secrecy you can now visit by catching a ferry from Orford to this National Trust property. You can take a boat trip along the River Ore, around Havergate Island to view the birds and plants in this protected area. There are also boat trips along the rivers Deben and Orwell and small ferries to take you across both these rivers and the nearby Butley Creek.
Other places of interest nearby include Shingle Street, Butley Creek, Bawdsey and a foot passenger ferry to Old Felixstowe. There are two pubs overlooking the River Deben, the Ramsholt Arms in Ramsholt, and The May Bush Inn in Waldringfield.
As you would expect there are many traditional pubs and restaurants in the area providing a wide variety of food - including oysters, crab and lobsters! The closest pub is the newly re-opened Butley Oyster (2 miles away)
Whatever you would like to do we will try to point you in the right direction.
